A vegan is someone who does not consume any animal product. There are various reasons for people choosing becoming a vegan and it is closely identified with vegetarianism which is the practice of not eating any food that has animal content. Veganism takes on this philosophy and expands it by including not just food from those things that contains anything that was taken from animals, or was processed with the use of animal products. While a vegetarian will drink milk since the animal that produced it was not killed in the process of taking the milk, a vegan will still refuse to drink milk.
One of the main reasons why a person becomes a vegan is because they strongly believe in animal rights. They contend that animals have the same rights as humans and that they should never be treated as commodities or merely as sources of food and other products. They are fighting on behalf of the animals whom they see as fellow beings on the planet who should be taken care and given the same right to existence as humans. Because of this belief they contend that treating animals as a main source of food for humans is one of the grossest injustices that man has committed.
Another good reason why person becomes a vegan is the belief that raising animals for food is a wasteful and inefficient procedure. They contend that the resources used in raising animals like cattle or swine for food could have been used more efficiently if used for human consumption directly. With the current rate of population growth in the world they say that world resources are fast dwindling to the point where we can not go on as before, and that we need to think of drastic ways of conserving world resources. Veganism is one of the most direct way of addressing this concern.
Whatever the reason for a person to switching to a vegan lifestyle the fact remains that, if done properly, it is one of the healthiest diet that is available. There are certain nutrients in the body that has to be maintained no matter what. Fortunately these nutrients can all be found in plants. There are a lot of top athletes now who follow a vegan lifestyle, proving that being vegan does not mean that a person loses physical strength.
So if you feel that switching to a vegan lifestyle is the thing for you, then do it now.
