Cheers! Most always we hear a new report or study that states that drinking red wine is good for your health. That it allows the body to relax, that it is good for the heart. The truth is, it has nothing to do with the wine, at all. It is merely the consituents of the wine. The grape is an excellent antioxident for the heart and blood. Grapes have been known for centuries to promote a good cardiovascular system, however; grapes do so much more.
In order to get the same benefit from drinking red wine, you would have to consume at least two bottles or more a day versus eating a cup or two a day of red grapes. Grapes pack a powerful punch of antioxidents, one being resveratol. We see resveratol marketed everywhere today. Resveratol is not preserved in cooking the grapes, it is at its most powerful when consumed whole, as with the grape, since the resveratol is found beneath the skin of the grape, as part of the skin itself. It is also potent when dehydrated, as in raisins.
Grapes are loaded with polyphenols, as well, which is another form of a power packing antioxident.
They increase the nitric oxide levels in the blood, which prevents blood clots thereby reducing the chances of heart attacks. In addition the antioxidant present in grapes prevents the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, which blocks the blood vessels. Wine is fermented, rotted grapes, skin removed. The skin is the source of the nutrient. Our body needs the skin, not just the soft delicate inside. They are also good for digestion, and for a good functioning of our bowels.
Our health is indeed affected not just by how we eat, but also what we eat and drink. Again, studies have indicated that following a Mediterranean diet is a great way to protect our health and our heart. The Mediterranean diet does generally follow its meal with a glass of red wine, yet, they do not do this for health purposes, instead; this is part of their culture. However, they do consume a large amount of fresh fruits, particularly grapes, figs, and pomegranates; all of which promote a healthy heart and also results in an over all pattern of better health.
When we think about the little grape, we forget about how powerful it truly is. It is not in the red wine, it is in this little fruit that is a component of the wine, but it is not the wine itself that promotes our health. For other general health information fee free to visit Dr. McDougall.
